Value Stream Mapping (VSM) is a critical Lean tool used to visualize, analyze, and improve the flow of materials and information through a process. This practical course by The Fourth Dimension Training and Consultancy equips participants with the knowledge and skills to identify inefficiencies, uncover bottlenecks, and streamline operations for better performance across the entire value chain.Participants will walk through the steps of mapping both current and future states and will learn how to lead value stream improvement initiatives across departments and functions. Module 1: Introduction to Value Stream Mapping (VSM) What is a Value Stream? Benefits of VSM for process improvement Value-added vs. non-value-added activities

Module 2: Lean Fundamentals Review Overview of Lean principles Types of waste (TIMWOOD) and their impact on the value stream The Lean mindset: flow, pull, and continuous improvement

Module 3: Preparing for a VSM Exercise Scoping and selecting the right process Gathering data and selecting team members Setting expectations and defining boundaries

Module 4: Mapping the Current State Symbols and conventions used in VSM Creating a current-state map (material flow, information flow, lead time, etc.) Identifying constraints, inefficiencies, and delays

Module 5: Analyzing the Current State Map Identifying waste, bottlenecks, and redundant steps Using takt time, cycle time, and lead time for analysis Calculating process efficiency and process lead time

Module 6: Designing the Future State Map Lean principles for designing a more efficient state Strategies for improvement (pull systems, standard work, line balancing, etc.) Creating a roadmap for implementation

Module 7: VSM in Office and Service Environments Adapting VSM for transactional and knowledge work Mapping administrative processes (procurement, HR, finance, etc.) Case examples from service and public sector

Module 8: Facilitating VSM Workshops Roles and responsibilities of the facilitator Group dynamics and leading productive sessions Capturing insights and turning ideas into actions

Module 9: Sustaining Improvements Linking VSM to continuous improvement efforts (Kaizen, A3, etc.) Metrics and dashboards to monitor progress Building a culture of value stream thinking
